The owner of the Mall of America has taken over Xanadu and renamed it “American Dream.” They plan to spend another $1.5 billion on top of the $2 billion already spent and make the place look less damn ugly.
When I was in the indoor ski slope back in 2009 it looked nothing like their fancy artist rendering. I also like the tram/monorail that goes to the stadium. I guess you need one of those or it’s not really the future. Their plan is for this to all be done in time the 2014 Super Bowl across the street.
Triple Five revealed on Tuesday that it planned to spend $1.5 billion or more. It said it would expand the project to about 3 million square feet, from 2.2 million, by adding a water park and an amusement park, both under a climate-controlled, glass-and-steel dome
The state has already spent, by some accounts, as much as $1 billion on financing, tax breaks and highway improvements to support the development.
The state will provide about $200 million in financing to Triple Five
New Jersey has more malls per square mile than any other state in the U.S. So it makes perfect sense for the state to bailout one of the largest malls in the world with tax dollars. [sarcasm]
Irony at its finest: Failed Xanadu mega-mall renamed “American Dream”
Triple Five, the parent company of the Mall of America in Minnesota, has completed an agreement with lenders to take over operations of Meadowlands Xanadu
Except it wouldn’t be known as Xanadu anymore — the 2 million-square-foot retail and entertainment project would take on a new name, American Dream Meadowlands.

Maybe this thing can finally get finished already. It’ll be pretty neat to be able to go skiing in August. I went on a tour of the facility back in 2009 and it was pretty awesome.
Word is that the indoor ski slope at Meadowlands Xanadu has collapsed under the weight of the snow and ice. Kind of ironic, don’t you think?

Update: It turns out it wasn’t as bad as first reported. There was just an avalanche of snow that damaged the wall. Still ironic that snow broke a ski slope.
No, Tumblr.
Everyone, I’m elated to tell you that Tumblr will be joining Yahoo.
